What you will receive as part of this contract:
Building one codebase that produces real apps for both iOS and Android, instead of writing everything twice in Swift and Kotlin. Modern frameworks like React Native render genuine native components — this is not the web-view wrapper approach of a decade ago.
Roughly half, both upfront and ongoing — 85-90% of the code is shared, so every feature and every fix is built once. The saving compounds: two native codebases drift apart over time and double every estimate forever.
For the overwhelming majority of apps — bookings, marketplaces, social, content, health, fintech UI — yes, indistinguishable from native. The exceptions are games, heavy background processing and hardware-intensive apps, which belong in native code.
I build in React Native, primarily for hiring: it's TypeScript, so the developer pool is enormous, while Flutter's Dart is rarely used elsewhere. Both are capable frameworks — the hiring difference is what matters to a startup over years.
Bluetooth-heavy hardware apps, continuous background processing like always-on tracking, and high-end 3D games. If your app is one of those, I'll tell you to go native — in writing — rather than sell you the wrong architecture.
