The Concept

Telemed is a doctor-patient telemedicine mobile app designed to make healthcare access easier through remote consultations, appointment booking, doctor profiles, and secure communication. The app allows users to browse doctors, check availability, schedule appointments, and connect through video or phone consultations. It was built for patients who need convenient access to medical support and for doctors who need a structured way to manage appointments and consultations from one mobile platform.

🎯 Purpose & Use Case

The purpose of Telemed was to create a mobile-first healthcare platform where patients can book appointments with doctors and attend consultations remotely. Instead of depending only on physical visits or manual scheduling, users can select a doctor, choose an available time slot, and decide whether they want a video call, audio call, or other communication method. The app is useful for telehealth providers, clinics, doctors, and patients who want a smoother digital consultation experience. It supports appointment management, doctor discovery, consultation scheduling, and remote communication in one connected workflow.

⚠️ Challenges & Friction Points

The main challenge was building a healthcare app that felt simple for patients while still supporting complex appointment and consultation workflows. Users needed to view doctors, understand availability, choose time slots, book appointments, and start video or phone consultations without confusion. Another challenge was real-time communication. Telemedicine apps require reliable video calling, phone call options, appointment status handling, and smooth backend communication. The app needed to feel stable and trustworthy because healthcare users expect clarity, privacy, and reliability. The user interface also needed to stay clean across multiple flows, including welcome screens, home dashboard, appointment booking, doctor profile, consultation mode selection, appointment cards, and bottom navigation.

Engineering & Solution Patterns

The app was developed using React Native to support a consistent experience across mobile platforms. The interface was structured around core healthcare journeys: onboarding, dashboard, doctor profile, appointment booking, schedule selection, communication mode selection, and consultation access. For real-time healthcare communication, the app used Socket.io and WebRTC-related patterns to support live consultation workflows. Backend services were connected through Express.js, MongoDB, and Mongoose ODM, while the frontend focused on clear UI states, appointment cards, doctor details, and mobile-friendly flows. The design prioritized usability, trust, and quick access to care. Patients could see doctor information, appointment counts, consultation options, time slots, and contact methods clearly before booking.

📈 Business & Product Impact

The final product gave the client a practical telemedicine mobile app that supports doctor appointment booking and remote consultation workflows. Patients can browse doctor details, select available schedules, and connect through video or phone calls, while doctors can manage consultation activity more efficiently. The project helped turn a healthcare service idea into a structured digital product with real appointment and communication features. It demonstrates how React Native and real-time communication technologies can be combined to build a modern telehealth experience for patients and providers.
